That morning, the community hall of the hamlet Kadibeso in Argodadi, Sedayu, Bantul felt more alive than usual. The sky, which was beginning to clear, blended with laughter and banter filling the air. Here, the students of the Community Service Programme (KKN) of UNY together with the Argodadi Pinilih disabled community gathered in an activity entitled “A Day of Learning and Exchanging Feelings.”

Banana Peel Becomes an Eco-Friendly Innovation for Lead Detection in Water

A student team at Universitas Negeri Yogyakarta (UNY) has presented a unique innovation in safeguarding water quality by utilizing banana peel waste as the main material. Through a study titled “Green Synthesis Cu₂O/TiO₂ Nanotube Arrays (TNA) for Detection of Pb²⁺ Ions in Water”, the team succeeded in developing an environmentally-friendly technology capable of detecting the presence of the heavy metal lead (Pb²⁺) more efficiently and sustainably.

“Elinging Lahar, Karsaning Karya”: 15 Years of Cold Lahar — Crafting Works for a Sustainable River

The Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences (FMIPA) of UNY, together with the community group Pemerti Kali Code, held an event themed “Elinging Lahar, Karsaning Karya: Remembering 15 Years of the Cold Lahar, Crafting Works for a Sustainable River.” The gathering reflects on the 2010 cold-lahar event on Mount Merapi and introduces an innovation in the digitalisation of the “River School (Code)” programme as part of the DigiCODE initiative for environmental education.

University of Yogyakarta (UNY) has once again shown its international presence. Five doctoral (PhD) students from the Vocational Technology and Education (PTK) program at UNY together with one professor took active participation in the international conference GeNeMe 2025 – Communities in New Media, recently held at Technische Universität Dresden (TU Dresden), Germany.

The prestigious conference served as a scientific forum for global researchers to share ideas and innovations in the fields of education, technology, and new media.

For Dhiva Angger Sakhena, a student from Sukorejo (Tugu, Trenggalek), the path to Universitas Negeri Yogyakarta (UNY) actually began with a period of waiting and long struggle. After failing his first attempt to enter tertiary education, Dhiva decided to take a gap year. But he didn’t fill that year with sorrow — instead, he dedicated himself socially. He taught English to children in his village — an initiative he designed himself, as a form of responsibility and service to his community.

97th Youth Pledge Ceremony Wears Traditional Attire, Implementation of Youth Congress from Various Tribes

On Tuesday, 28 October 2025, UNY held a ceremony in commemoration of the 97th Youth Pledge Day at the rectorate courtyard, with solemnity and order.

With the theme “Young Men and Women Move, United Indonesia”, UNY reaffirmed its commitment to continue moving toward a diverse Indonesia in unity.

This commitment was visible in the clothing worn by the ceremony participants, which consisted of various ethnic groups. This is one way to demonstrate that the Youth Pledge was attended by many organizations and unities—not just Jong Java or Jong Celebes alone.

Students at UNY Develop AR Flash Cards Based on the Nyabuk Gunung Tradition for Disaster-Mitigation Education

A team of students at Universitas Negeri Yogyakarta (UNY) have successfully initiated an educational innovation in the form of augmented-reality (AR) flash cards based on the tradition of Nyabuk Gunung to enhance children’s understanding of landslide-disaster mitigation. This innovation is the result of a research scheme under the Student Creativity Programme for Social-Humanities Research (PKM-RSH) funded by the Directorate of Learning and Student Affairs (Belmawa) of the Ministry of Education, Culture, Research and Technology.

The seminar featured national figures and academics discussing the importance of strengthening understanding and practice of Pancasila values amidst the dynamics of national life.
