One of the core principles of Universitas Negeri Yogyakarta (UNY) is sustainability. The UNY Code of Conduct, which aims to improve human health and safeguard the environment, must be adhered to by the food suppliers. As a fundamental component of our concept, our suppliers must likewise understand and share our dedication to sustainability and the environment. It is our responsibility to consistently motivate our suppliers to integrate sustainable development principles into their supply chains and internal business processes. Our catering staff at UNY is in charge of creating the Sustainable Food Policy and making sure it is implemented effectively, both of which are essential to the university's efforts to stay in its current standing. Universitas Negeri Yogyakarta (UNY) has established an ethical sourcing policy to ensure that all food and supplies procured by the university come from responsible and sustainable sources. The policy is embedded in the university’s procurement guidelines and applies to campus canteens, catering services, and general supplies, emphasizing environmental sustainability by prioritizing eco-friendly and certified products, fair labor practices that prevent exploitative or unsafe working conditions, local community empowerment through preference for local producers and small enterprises, and the promotion of health and well-being by encouraging nutritious and safe food choices. Implementation is monitored through procurement contracts and supplier agreements that include sustainability clauses, while in practice UNY collaborates with local food suppliers, promotes waste reduction through reusable and eco-friendly packaging, and integrates sustainability criteria in vendor selection. UNY also works closely with companies to procure goods/services with the principles of efficiency and economy in accordance with healthy business practices, as stated in the Rector Decree Letter Number 34 of 2023 in article 4 point b, article 5 point c and article 6

| 156 | 12. Responsible Consumption and Production | 12.2.3 | Policy waste disposal - hazardous materials | Have a policy, process or practice on waste disposal - Covering hazardous materials | Show Article |
Hazardous material disposal is governed by UNY regulations. Rector Decree Letters Number 16 Year 2021 and 20 Year 2017 (art 8, art 12, art 6-7) concerning the Green Campus are among the policies. The goal of these regulations is to keep harmful and dangerous products out of UNY.
The management of waste and waste containing hazardous and toxic materials (B3) is already covered under UNY policy. It is stressed in this policy that UNY supports the development of a sustainable, sanitary, and environmentally friendly waste sanitation management system. B3 waste from laboratory learning activities in all faculties is processed by UNY in partnership with other organizations.

| 157 | 12. Responsible Consumption and Production | 12.2.4 | Policy waste disposal - landfill policy | Have a policy on waste disposal - to measure the amount of waste sent to landfill and recycled | Show Article |
UNY has a detailed program in place to quantify the quantity of garbage that is recycled and transported to landfills as part of its commitment to responsible waste disposal. This strategy is a component of its broader sustainability initiative, which also involves monitoring and controlling waste streams to keep as much stuff out of landfills as possible. Water waste is processed and recycled for plant irrigation, while organic waste—such as food scraps—is composted and utilized to feed the plants in campus gardens. The cleaning crew gathers and sorts plastic and inorganic garbage, making sure that the right recycling procedures are followed, as stated in the Rector Decree Letter Number 16 of 2021 in article 4 point a, and article 14. |

| 158 | 12. Responsible Consumption and Production | 12.2.5 | Policy for minimisation of plastic use | Have policies around use minimisation of plastic | Show Article |
|
By implementing a program to reduce the usage of plastic, UNY actively supports the environment, Rector’s Regulation No. 20/2017, Article 8 mandates the reduction of plastic usage on campus and the substitution with biodegradable materials (e.g., paper/cellulose). This policy remains in force and is reinforced by Rector’s Regulation No. 16/2021, Article 4A (g, k), which requires proper waste disposal and the use of recycled items, supporting plastic minimisation and circular practices in line with sustainability. The goal of this strategic plan is to limit plastic waste and decrease plastic usage. Through regular socialization programs, the university actively involves staff and students in this environmentally responsible endeavor. UNY offers suggestions to lessen the use of plastic in stores and supermarkets on university property in order to promote appropriate garbage disposal.
The data on the reduction of plastic trash clearly shows the impact of these activities. This accomplishment demonstrates UNY's dedication to sustainability and the observable results of its plastic reduction initiatives.

| 159 | 12. Responsible Consumption and Production | 12.2.6 | Policy for minimisation of disposable items | Have policies around use minimisation of disposable items | Show Article |
There are rules at UNY about reducing the use of throwaway items. Disposable goods are still utilized extensively nowadays. Disposable objects that are difficult to handle and non-biodegradable lead to a continuous rise in waste. Disposable item trash also pollutes the environment and poses a serious risk to human health.
UNY implemented measures to control the use of disposable items, particularly with relation to food and drink containers made of paper and plastic. In addition to Rector Decree No. 34 Year 2023 on Policy for effective and efficient procurement of goods/services, Rector Decree No. 20 Year 2017 and No. 16 Year 2021 on Green Campus prohibit the use of plastic containers for food and beverages.

The installation of appeals in the campus area of Universitas negeri Yogyakarta, both in the plaza and the university's cooperative, aims to reduce the number of plastic bags used as a tool to carry shopping items, which is a method used by the managers of these two shopping centers. The appeals are installed not far from the cashier area, with the hope that all buyers will be able to see and heed the appeals. |
