An inspirational scene was seen recently at Kampung Emas Krapyak IX, Seyegan, Sleman — a group of foreign students from various countries studying at UNY enthusiastically learned “ngarit” or cutting grass for livestock feed. This activity is part of a community service programme initiated by UNY’s International Office to introduce local culture and build closeness with the countryside community. The programme is attended by students from Pakistan, Egypt, Sudan, Mozambique and Madagascar.

A number of housewives and micro-small-medium enterprise (MSME) actors in Kampung Emas Krapyak IX, Seyegan, Sleman, participated in training on making ecoprint-patterned hijabs as an effort to enhance skills and economic independence. This activity is part of UNY’s community service programme focused on women’s empowerment through environmentally-friendly techniques and based on local wisdom. Kampung Emas Seyegan has been one of UNY’s assisted villages since 2023, serving as a society-empowerment laboratory.

The campus of UNY turned into a mini-outer-space setting as part of the annual programme Campus Grand Tour English for Holidays (EFH) 2025, organised by the English Education Study Program (PBI), Faculty of Languages, Arts and Culture (FBSB) UNY. This year’s theme, “Adventure Outer Space”, not only introduced English to children but also fostered their interest in science and technology from an early age.

UNY continues to assert its role as a change-driving campus through the “UNY Berdampak” programme, which aligns with the national “Dikti Saintek Berdampak” initiative from the Ministry of Education, Research and Technology. One concrete form is community empowerment in the processing of jatropha seeds (Jatropha curcas L.) into a source of renewable fuel, implemented at Pasar Blumbang Mataram, Wirokerten, Bantul.

UNY and UGM have entered into a strategic collaboration via a community‐service programme titled “Utilisation of Local Medicinal Plants as Natural Antiseptics.” The programme targets residents of the village of Desa Girirejo, Kecamatan Imogiri, Bantul, as a form of empowerment based on local potential and to raise awareness about environmental sanitation. UNY officially established a strategic cooperation with Guangdong University of Foreign Studies (GDUFS), China, marked by the signing of a Memorandum of Agreement (MoA). The meeting, aimed at strengthening collaboration in education, research, and cultural exchange, was held at the Rectorate Building of UNY on Friday, 20 June 2025. The Faculty of Languages, Arts, and Culture at UNY successfully organized a vibrant and meaningful German Culture Exhibition on Thursday, 19 June 2025. The event, held within the faculty environment, not only showcased the rich culture of Germany but also became tangible proof of the students’ creativity and commitment to learning. A total of 23 student groups were actively involved as participants. The Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences at Universitas Negeri Yogyakarta (FMIPA UNY) has teamed up with Universitas Udayana’s Faculty of Agriculture and Bali’s Regional Research and Innovation Agency (BRIDA) to conduct joint research on developing new orchid varieties native to Bali. The project focuses on creating indoor-friendly orchid bonsai suited for diverse living environments, with collaborative teams conducting field observations and cultivation trials to support this goal.
