UNY and Udayana University Collaborate on Balinese Orchid Bonsai Innovation

The Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences at Universitas Negeri Yogyakarta (FMIPA UNY) has teamed up with Universitas Udayana’s Faculty of Agriculture and Bali’s Regional Research and Innovation Agency (BRIDA) to conduct joint research on developing new orchid varieties native to Bali. The project focuses on creating indoor-friendly orchid bonsai suited for diverse living environments, with collaborative teams conducting field observations and cultivation trials to support this goal.

The partnership’s progress was spotlighted during a visit to FMIPA UNY on June 4, 2025, by Dr. I Putu Sudiarta, M.Si., Ph.D., Dean of Universitas Udayana’s Faculty of Agriculture. He emphasized that the collaboration goes beyond formal agreements. “This is more than just an MoU or MoA—it’s a real partnership, with activities fully supported by BRIDA, including funding,” he said. Their work has already resulted in the publication of a book showcasing the diversity of Balinese orchids and has laid the foundation for commercial indoor orchid bonsai production.

In addition to academic advancements, the collaboration also aims to promote public appreciation for Indonesia’s biodiversity. FMIPA UNY presented their orchid bonsai collection—many developed from this joint project—at UNY’s “Pasar Kangen” cultural festival, where they received enthusiastic attention from visitors.

FMIPA UNY Dean Prof. Dadan Rosana, M.Si., expressed strong support for the partnership, highlighting its broader cultural and regional value. “This collaboration brings mutual benefits—not only for our universities but also for Yogyakarta and Bali as regions rich in culture and natural heritage,” he said. FMIPA UNY remains committed to deepening this cooperation and expanding the impact of their orchid research.
