Holding Socialization on Introducing Renewable Energy and Energy-Saving Education to Support SDGs 7 at SMPN 1 Wates

Universitas Negeri Yogyakarta (UNY), through the Marketing Management Study Program, organized a socialization event titled “Solutions for Energy-Saving and Environmentally Friendly Approaches for an Energy-Aware Generation” at SMP Negeri 1 Wates. This activity was part of the Sustainable Development Education course and aimed to support the achievement of Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 7: Affordable and Clean Energy.

The program targeted 9th-grade students, focusing on introducing basic concepts of renewable energy and the importance of transitioning to clean energy from an early age. During the session, UNY students explained various environmentally friendly alternative energy sources such as solar, biomass, water, wind, and geothermal energy. They also emphasized everyday behaviors that promote energy saving, both at school and at home.

The event was conducted in an interactive and educational way, supported by the course instructor and the school. In addition to presentations, the students invited participants to take part in an energy-saving campaign activity by drawing creative posters with themes related to energy conservation. This encouraged students to express sustainability messages visually and helped build awareness about the responsible and efficient use of electrical energy.

Participant enthusiasm grew even more during an interactive quiz session designed to test students’ understanding of clean energy topics and make learning fun. One student commented that the activity was enjoyable and expanded their knowledge about renewable energy.

A total of 32 students participated in the event, which positively impacted environmental literacy and energy awareness at the school. Through this participatory approach, students were not merely passive listeners but were actively involved as agents of change who can practice energy-saving habits.

The socialization was carried out by students of the UNY Marketing Management Study Program, including Reva Dhea Dhevinta, alongside other team members. Similar activities are planned to continue as part of UNY’s commitment to supporting SDGs through education, community engagement, and collaboration with educational institutions.

In the future, it is hoped that students will become drivers of sustainability education at the local level so that efforts to achieve SDGs — especially in the area of clean and affordable energy — can be ongoing and have a broad impact on society.
