UNY KKNM Students Hold Education on Maintaining Reog Wayang Costumes in Kedon, Bantul

UNY’s Independent Community Service Program (KKN Mandiri) students conducted an educational activity on the maintenance of Reog Wayang costumes in Padukuhan Kedon, Sumbermulyo Village, Bambanglipuro District, Bantul Regency. This initiative was part of efforts to support the preservation of traditional art and culture within the local community.

The event featured Wahyu Depa Prakarsa, A.Md. as the main resource person. He explained that the costumes used in Reog Wayang dance are not merely performance accessories, but play an important role in expressing character, identity, and aesthetic value of the dance. Therefore, proper understanding and maintenance of these costumes is essential.

Wahyu emphasized that costumes must be cared for correctly so they remain wearable and retain their artistic value. This includes correct cleaning, storing, and repairing techniques to prevent damage from moisture, dirt, or frequent use. He also noted that properly fitting costumes help dancers perform comfortably and reinforce the message conveyed in the performance.

The educational session was warmly received by local youth groups (karang taruna) and traditional art practitioners. In addition to theoretical explanations, participants also took part in discussions about their own experiences caring for Reog Wayang costumes used in community performances.

The UNY students involved in the activity were Ahdanisa, Tafakur Rachman Sumpeno, Maulida Arista Nur Priyani, Arvina Damayanti, Roby Syahrul Mubarok, Tedjun Cahya Kartalumasih, Khoirunisa Wulandari, and Radika Kamila Dewi. They played active roles in planning, organizing, and guiding the program alongside community members.

According to the KKNM group leader (Ahdanisa), the education program was carried out out of concern for the sustainability of village cultural traditions. She noted that although Reog Wayang costumes are frequently used, community members often lack adequate knowledge about how to maintain them properly, even though these costumes are important assets in performances.

The students hope that this program will have a long-term impact on the community of Kedon by helping maintain the quality and longevity of traditional art costumes and strengthening local cultural identity.
