UNY Establishes Mental Health Center to Support the Well-Being of Its Academic Community

In an effort to strengthen the well-being of its academic community, one of the faculties at Yogyakarta State University (UNY) has officially established a Mental Health Center, dedicated to serving students, lecturers, and administrative staff. The center serves as a safe and confidential space that provides counseling services, mental health education, and emotional support for campus members who may experience stress, fatigue, or emotional challenges caused by academic or professional pressures.

The services offered include individual and group counseling, psychological assessments, stress management training, mindfulness sessions, and mental health seminars. The center is managed by professional psychologists and trained counselors in collaboration with lecturers from the fields of education and health sciences to ensure a holistic approach to mental well-being.

Vice Rector for General Affairs and Human Resources, Prof. Edi Purwanta, stated that the establishment of the Mental Health Center marks a strategic step for UNY in addressing non-academic aspects that are equally vital as intellectual achievements. “Mental health is the foundation of productivity and creativity. Through this center, UNY aims to ensure that every member of our academic community has a safe place to receive emotional and psychological support,” he explained. He further emphasized that the presence of this center is expected to cultivate a campus culture that values empathy, openness, and mutual care for collective well-being.

The establishment of the Mental Health Center reflects UNY’s strong commitment to creating a healthy, inclusive, and sustainable campus, aligning with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)—particularly Goal 3: Good Health and Well-Being and Goal 4: Quality Education. Through this initiative, UNY hopes that every member of its academic community can grow and thrive academically, socially, and emotionally within a supportive and caring environment.
