Student KKN UNY’s Practice of Making Eco-Enzyme as a Real Action Toward a Greener Village

In order to increase community awareness of the importance of organic waste management, a team of students on the Community Service Program (KKN) from UNY carried out an educational activity in Dusun Druju, Desa Margodadi. This activity took place at the home of Mrs Umi (RT 04), who fully supported the implementation of this program.

The training aimed to provide the community with practical insights and skills in processing kitchen waste into an environmentally friendly product. Eco-enzyme — made from a mixture of leftover fruit, sugar, and water — has various benefits, from a multipurpose cleaner, liquid fertilizer, to a natural pest repellent.

Communicative and participative students hoped that the community would not only understand the importance of recycling organic waste, but also be capable of practising it independently in daily life.

The activity drew strong enthusiasm from the women of RT 03, 04, and 05, who felt helped by the new and easily applicable knowledge. Furthermore, the program became a real form of contribution of the KKN UNY students in supporting the movement for a clean, healthy, and sustainable village.

The session continued with material delivered by Mrs Isti Yunita (the Field Lecturer Supervisor for the KKN UNY), who explained the benefits of eco-enzyme as an environmentally friendly multi-purpose liquid — for household cleaning, organic fertilizer, even natural waste decomposer. The participants (women from RT 03, 04, 05) were then directly involved in making eco-enzyme from kitchen waste such as fruit and vegetable peels.

The enthusiasm was outstanding: they actively followed the production process, discussed the benefits and daily use. This activity not only provided new knowledge but also fostered shared awareness of the importance of wise organic waste management.

The event concluded with a group photo session as documentation and remembrance of shared learning and environmental care. The activity is a real contribution of the KKN UNY students in supporting the movement for a clean, healthy, sustainable village. The activity also shows that big changes can start from small steps—our tagline: “small action, big benefit” from kitchen household toward a more sustainable Earth.
