UNY Empowers Bugel Farmers with Fish Farming Training to Strengthen Food and Nutrition Security

To support food and nutrition security among rural communities, a team from Universitas Negeri Yogyakarta (UNY) conducted a two-day training and mentoring program on household fish farming for residents in Bugel Village, Panjatan Subdistrict, Kulon Progo. The program, held on August 10–11, 2024, at the Bugel Village Hall, focused on promoting sustainable fish cultivation practices. The team—consisting of Prof. Dr. Tien Aminatun, S.Si., M.Si., Rizka Apriani Putri, S.Si., M.Sc., Dr. Fitri Rahmawati, M.P., Dr. Ponty Sya’banto Putra Hutama, S.E., M.Si., and student volunteers—led the initiative as part of their community service mission.
 
The event was well-received, with 27 out of 30 invited residents attending, marking a 90% participation rate. Local leaders, including Bugel Village Head Mr. Sunardi, village secretary Mr. Wuryanto, and community figure Mr. Suparwata, also showed their support by attending the event. Their presence added enthusiasm and reinforced the importance of sustainable food practices within the community.
 
The program included three main modules: BUDIKDAMBER (catfish cultivation in buckets), fish-based food product processing, and basic financial literacy, including accounting and marketing strategies for the processed goods. The team’s comprehensive approach aimed not only to improve food self-sufficiency but also to create new economic opportunities for farming families in Bugel.
