UNY Students Promote Javanese Philosophy 'Tutur, Uwur, Sembur' to Strengthen Etiquette Among Generation Alpha

A team of students from Universitas Negeri Yogyakarta (UNY) has successfully advanced in the Program Kreativitas Mahasiswa Riset Sosial Humaniora (PKM-RSH) organized by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Research, and Technology. Their research, titled “Eksplorasi Internalisasi Falsafah Tutur, Uwur, Sembur dalam Budaya Sekolah Muhammadiyah untuk Penguatan Tata Krama Berbahasa Generasi Alpha”, explores the internalization of the Javanese philosophy of Tutur, Uwur, Sembur to strengthen language etiquette among Generation Alpha.

The team, consisting of Nujumul Laily Zahra, Nurani Dwi Astuti, Fadellia Ardhias Vitantri, Taqiya Ahsanu Wibowo, and Safiratul Janah, conducted their research in three Muhammadiyah elementary schools in Yogyakarta: SD Muhammadiyah Sapen, SD Muhammadiyah Prambanan, and SD Muhammadiyah Bodon. These schools were chosen due to their commitment to character education and etiquette.

The research highlights the importance of character education based on local wisdom for Generation Alpha, who are growing up in the digital era. The Javanese philosophy of Tutur, Uwur, Sembur—meaning guidance, beneficial example, and good wishes—was identified as a valuable approach to instill proper language etiquette and character in students.

The findings suggest that integrating this philosophy into school culture can enhance students' language etiquette and character development. The team hopes that this initiative will contribute to the preservation of cultural values and the formation of good character in the younger generation.
