UNY’s PKM Team Trains the Residents of Jomboran to Process Organic Waste into Eco-Enzyme

The Community Service Team (PKM) from UNY held a training and practical session for the residents of Dusun Jomboran, Minggir, Sleman, on Friday, 15 August 2025. The session, which took place in a local resident’s house and was attended by 30 participants, aimed to provide education and skills to effectively and environmentally manage household organic waste.
In the first session, eco-enzyme practitioners Cornelia Budimarwanti and Regina Tutik Padmaningrum explained in depth about the importance of eco-enzyme in waste management and its everyday uses. After the theory, participants followed a demonstration and hands-on practice guided by Regina Tutik, where they learned how to make eco-enzyme from a mix of organic fruit and vegetable waste, brown sugar, and water in a 3 : 1 : 10 mix ratio. At the end, each participant received a sample of eco-enzyme to take home. The head of the target group in Jomboran appreciated the activity, saying: “In addition to giving us new knowledge and skills, this activity also encourages us to care more about the environment in simple but very impactful ways.” He hoped the skills learned would continue to be applied by residents so that the environment around them benefits.
This activity is expected to be the starting step for positive change in waste management at the household level. By processing organic waste into useful products, water pollution from waste can be prevented and reduced. Through understanding and practicing eco-enzyme production more broadly, the problem of waste is hoped to be addressed more effectively. The article highlights that this activity not only shows UNY’s commitment to community service and environmental preservation but also supports the achievement of several UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and Key Performance Indicators (IKU) for higher education.
