Kelopi on Wheels: Authentic Moringa Coffee Innovation by UNY Students

In the midst of the growing coffee beverage trend among young people, a group of Universitas Negeri Yogyakarta (UNY) students has successfully introduced a unique innovation that combines the rich taste of coffee with the health benefits of moringa leaves. They named this product Kelopi on Wheels, a brand born from the entrepreneurial spirit of students through the 2025 P2MW Funding Program.
The P2MW Kelopi on Wheels team began with an invitation from the founder, who had previously achieved success at the KMI Expo 2024. This invitation was then embraced by four students: Deny Bagus Pramono Putra, Salsabila Rodiyah, Oktafiana Wulandari, and Berlan Dwi Tama. With diverse backgrounds—three from the Economic Education program and one with experience as a barista—they collaborated to form a solid team to develop the moringa coffee business idea.
The idea of introducing moringa coffee stemmed from concerns about the coffee-drinking habits that often overlook health aspects, especially excessive sugar use. Moringa leaves, known as a "superfood" due to their rich antioxidants and other health benefits, were then combined with coffee. This inspiration became more concrete when the founder conducted an Independent Community Service Program (KKN Mandiri), where one of the programs focused on managing moringa leaves. From there, the idea emerged to present a coffee that is not only delicious but also healthy.
Creating an authentic moringa coffee blend was not easy. The Kelopi on Wheels team had to go through various trials by combining coffee powder and moringa leaves in different proportions. Each experiment was meticulously recorded, from taste, aroma, to color. After repeated processes, they finally found a balanced composition that maintained the distinctive coffee flavor while introducing a unique touch from the moringa leaves.
One of the biggest challenges was building consumer trust. Many were still skeptical about the idea of moringa leaves in a cup of coffee. However, this curiosity became an entry point. Upon trying, consumers acknowledged the unique taste presented: the coffee remained strong, but there was a distinctive moringa flavor that made them want to try again.
To introduce their product, Kelopi on Wheels not only opened a kiosk on Jalan Sagan, Yogyakarta, but also expanded distribution through bottled variants placed in the canteens of the Faculty of Economics and Business (FEB) and the Faculty of Engineering (FT) at UNY. Additionally, the product is marketed through digital platforms like GoFood.
The main advantage of Kelopi on Wheels lies in the use of moringa leaf powder as its unique selling point (USP). In Yogyakarta, they are pioneers of moringa coffee, allowing them to differentiate themselves from competitors.
Kelopi on Wheels does not only aim to be recognized locally but also aspires to penetrate national and even international markets. They dare to dream of exporting moringa coffee as a healthy and authentic Indonesian innovation.
