FMIPA UNY Invites Children with Special Needs to Paint with Eco-Friendly Dyes

The Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences (FMIPA) at UNY carried out a painting-workshop activity using environmentally friendly dyes at SLB Bhakti Pertiwi, Yogyakarta. The event was designed to involve children with special needs — including those with hearing impairments, speech impairments and intellectual disabilities — and was supported by a team of UNY lecturers and students.

The workshop was attended by 42 participants, who were accompanied by their teachers and UNY students. In a colourful atmosphere, the children enthusiastically put their imagination onto canvases using safe, eco-friendly dyes.

“This training aims not only to stimulate creativity and provide a fun art experience, but also to introduce a way of creating art that is aligned with sustainability,” said Prof. Jaslin Ikhsan. The activity thus also contributed to the achievement of SDG 4 (Quality Education), SDG 10 (Reduced Inequalities), and SDG 12 (Responsible Consumption and Production).

By using eco-friendly dyes, the activity ensures the safety of the children’s health and at the same time instils early awareness of the importance of caring for the earth. The cooperation between UNY’s FMIPA, the special-needs school and the community is also an expression of inclusive education and sustainable development.
