UNY Students Develop Light Sensor Audio Cultural Character Learning Media
A group of UNY students consisting of Endah Istiqomah (Elementary School Teacher Education Department), Hindun Nur Aisyah (Early Childhood Education Department), and Nur Milati (Mechatronic Engineering Education Department) developed learning media for inculcating cultural characters through audio-based pop-up learning for elementary school students.
"The pop-up media that we have developed seeks to instill cultural learning and introduce a very diverse Indonesian culture to children," said Endah.
Based on data obtained from the Central Statistics Agency in collaboration with the Institute of Southeast Asian Studies (ISEAS), in 2013, 633 large ethnic groups consisted of sub-tribes and small groups of these tribes. This condition illustrates the plurality and heterogeneity of Indonesia.
Therefore, introducing the nation's culture to children is vital to fostering nationalism and patriotism. It is also in line with and relevant to the objectives of the SDGs (Sustainable Development Goals), which Indonesia has ratified from the United Nations. Moreover, the basis of Law no. 20 of 2003 Chapter II, Article 3 concerning the National Education System states that learning media is vital to support effective and efficient learning achievement.
"Based on the results of our observations and interviews at SD N Triharjo, children have not been directed yet to education which shapes the Indonesian cultural values and character. At the same time, a culture-based character is an important thing, especially from a young age. Children then only understand the culture in its beauty but do not yet understand the importance of culture itself," added Endah.
This audio-based cultural pop-up book is complete with an LDR sensor. The media of this book automatically sends output audio when we open the book. The content audio adopted the songs from each region. In addition, the book also gives a brief explanation of cultures such as the philosophy of the traditional house, traditional clothes, dances, weapons, and food from the area.
