Sendang Mudal: Protecting a Natural Treasure Through Conservation

Sendang Mudal is a natural spring located in the center of a rice field in Sawangan, Magelang District, Central Jawa Province. This spring is utilized to water public pools and rice fields, and it continues to flow even during the dry season. The vital value of this spring is something we wish to preserve, thus the management of Sendang Mudal, with the collaboration of the Sawangan sub-district, requested that the UNY lecturer team undertake activities to educate the community on how to preserve the spring through direct action.
On Friday, October 6, 2023, Bumdes Bimasena as a partners received training and mentoring on how to identify species and biota (plants, birds, dragonflies, butterflies, reptiles, and amphibians) that inhabit Sendang Mudal and its surrounds. Students carried out the training and mentorship, which included identification exercises and actual field training for biota or living organisms in the Sendang Mudal Edupark region. Partners can recognize numerous plants near Sendang Mudal.
One of the Sendang Mudal Edupark Development programs is to establish a learning environment in the Sendang Mudal Edupark region. Bumdes Bimasena, the manager of the Sendang Mudal Edupark area, uses banners, posters, or banners to display information on the biota that dwell in the area. Tree stands are the primary issue since they have a direct impact on groundwater availability, ensuring that Sendang Mudal can continue to produce water as a spring. Other biota that will be identified include reptiles, birds, dragonflies, and butterflies.
To promote Sendang Mudal's tourist attraction, the tourism manager worked with the UNY educator team and Audio-Visual laboratory to make a teaser video showcasing the area's tourism and learning potential. This educational tourism potential is an attraction that Sawangan Village hopes to develop, with Sendang Mudal serving as the center of edutourism. The UNY professor team's water spring conservation activities, in partnership with the Sawangan village authority, are part of a larger effort to sustain water spring and freshwater management. This work can help to support SDG 14 UNY.
