RAISING GENDER ISSUES UNY SOCIOLOGY STUDENT TEAM WIN GOLD MEDAL AND SPECIAL AWARD IN INTERNATIONAL COMPETITION
The Yogyakarta State University (UNY) Sociology Education student team won a gold medal and a Macedonia special award at the online World Youth Invention and Innovation Award (WYIIA) student innovation competition on 15 – 20 August 2021.
WYIIA is an event for student innovation in various fields such as education, social humanities, technology, and science. This competition was participated by various levels of elementary, secondary, and tertiary education with a total of 367 teams from all over the world participating. This world-class innovation competition encourages young innovators to come up with ideas in an effort to solve world problems at a macro level.
This competition was participated by many world countries and even more than 30 world countries competing for superior innovations ranging from Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand, India, Los Angeles America, South Korea, Indonesia, Philippines, and European, American, and Asian countries.
The Sociology Education Study Department student team was one of the finalists in this world event where this team consisted of Irfan Hermawan (2019), Mirdayanti (2020), Puja Agung (2019), Embun Ayudya (2018), and Masud Hamdani (2019) from the Communication Science Study Department. This team raised the issue of gender starting from their concern about the low level of gender literacy in Indonesia which has an impact and is correlated to the high number of violence against women, restrictions on access, the low quality of marriage, and gender dominance that threatens the sustainability of development in Indonesia from various sectors.
The UNY sociology education student team in this competition produced the “MARY–U” application. The MARY–U application provides many media to present gender literacy in various forms ranging from visual articles, audio podcasts, and video movies. The services provided in this application, apart from gender literacy, also provide features of premarital life such as reproductive health, planning, finance, and even parenting.
Applications that are packaged with modern and varied features are also a strategy for targeting users widely, from young people to people who are about to get married. As a result, on the awarding night, the UNY Sociology Study Department student team won a Gold Medal and a Special Award from Macedonia. Irfan also stated that this application will be developed and collaborated with authorized agencies such as KOMNAS Perempuan, the Ministry of Social Affairs and institutions that can support the realization of the applications they have compiled.
