The Key to Cleanliness and Waste Management is in The Sorting The Trash
The PPM Team for Independent Waste Sorting Management Department of Administrative Education, FISE UNY, has held an “Independent Waste Sorting Management Training” in Paduresan Hamlet, Imogiri District, Bantul Regency, last Sunday (8/8). The PPM team, chaired by Sutirman, M. Pd and consisted of Marita Ahdiyana, M. Si, and Kurnia Nur Fitriana, S. I. P, provided material on the independent segregation of household waste to the community of RW 9, Dukuh Paduresan, Imogiri District, Bantul Regency. “This training aims to increase public awareness of the importance of sorting household waste and preserving the surrounding environment”, explained Sutirman, M. Pd.
This activity is motivated by the fact that people in the area have bad habits in waste management, such as throwing garbage into the Celeng River. Even though it is a village area, the people in the area have limited land for disposal of garbage disposal holes. So far, household waste management is only limited to moving household waste to be disposed of at TPS or into rivers.
“The key to the success of the sanitation and waste management program lies in the sorting. Without segregation, waste processing becomes difficult, expensive, and has a high risk of polluting the environment and endangering health. Sorting is separating one type of waste from another and at a minimum, sorting into two types, namely organic and non-organic waste. As a first step in sorting household waste, it can be done by providing two trash bins as temporary shelters for separating organic and inorganic waste,” explained Kurnia Nur Fitriana, S. I. P.
The obstacles faced by the community in the Imogiri area include: (1) There is no separate trash can for organic and non-organic waste in each household; (2) There is no temporary waste collection site at the RW, hamlet, or even village level so that the existing household waste is allowed to accumulate because there is no transportation of household waste to the final waste disposal site; (3) There has been no effort from the Bantul Regency Government to accommodate the needs of the community; (4) Public awareness is still low regarding the dangers of waste which will continue to be a ticking time bomb in the future for health and environmental conservation; (5) The community does not yet have the skills to process organic waste and non-organic waste so that it is more efficient and has more value for the community.
