Introducing Folks Stories Through ‘Folebook’ : Folklore Braille Book For Blind Children

Team

The level of information literacy in children can be increased, especially for children with disabilities, through the literacy movement in schools. Teachers carry out the literacy movement in schools with a book approach to students. However, an evaluation must be in its implementation. One of these targets is children with disabilities who are blind. The survey in the field shows that the existence of braille books is minimal and difficult to find, even though its presence can be said to be very important for the blind. From the problem above, Hesti Wulandari, Ayu Kurnia Utami (Accounting Education Department), and Nur' Afiifah Djauharoh (Special Education Department) initiated this program. They saw business opportunities for making literacy materials in folklore books using the alphabet and braille letters for children in general and children with disabilities, especially the blind. In addition to improving information literacy, this book also introduces folklore in Indonesia.

This book also adds literature for people with disabilities, especially the blind, increasing awareness of people with disabilities. They named the book 'Folebook,' which is an acronym for Folklore Braille Book. 'Folebook' is a book with an Indonesian folklore theme for blind people and children in general. This book uses graphic illustrations so that the blind can imagine the depictions in the story. Apart from being a literacy material, this book also functions as a medium for teaching character values, especially for the blind through moral messages from folklore.

This project won funding from the Ministry of Education, Culture, Research and Technology's Directorate of Learning and Student Affairs in the Student Creativity Program in the Social Humanities Research in 2021. It passed the National Student Scientific Week (Pimnas), held online at the end of October. This activity is one of UNY's efforts in the sustainable development agenda in quality education.
