Universitas Negeri Yogyakarta (UNY) has taken a proactive role in addressing household organic waste issues by conducting a training and mentoring program on compost production using maggots as added value. Held on Saturday, 28 September 2024, at the home of the Iroyudan hamlet head in Guwosari Village, Pajangan Subdistrict, Bantul Regency, the event was attended by 25 participants. The program aimed to provide practical solutions for managing daily organic waste, while also empowering local residents with skills that hold economic potential.
Despite its agricultural promise, Guwosari Village faces significant challenges related to the accumulation of household organic waste. Many residents are still unfamiliar with effective and sustainable waste management methods. The introduction of maggot-based composting provided an innovative solution. Maggots are known for their ability to decompose organic materials quickly, and the resulting compost and larvae can be sold, adding economic value to the waste management process.
This community engagement program successfully enhanced the skills of local waste bank members in processing organic waste. Participants expressed positive feedback regarding the training's relevance and usefulness, with many reporting increased motivation and confidence to start independent composting and maggot cultivation. The initiative not only promoted environmental responsibility but also encouraged entrepreneurship by showing residents how waste can be transformed into a source of income.
