Disaster Mitigation Study Center

Head: Drs. Suhadi Purwantara, M.Sc.

 b. Introduction

Major disasters such as the 2004 Aceh Tsunami, the 2006 Yogyakarta Earthquake, 2010 Merapi Eruption have motivated universities, including Yogyakarta State University, to care. LPPM UNY has carried out various activities related to disasters in the form of post-disaster assistance. Disasters are not only natural disasters such as earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, floods, and landslides but also non-natural disasters such as disease outbreaks and traffic accidents and social disasters such as promiscuity, early marriage, kidnapping, riots, fights between people. Youth and students, and war.

In this regard, it is time for UNY to have a Center for Disaster Mitigation Studies. This Study Center is needed to help the community when affected by a disaster and after a disaster (post hazard), even preparation before a disaster (pre hazard). Thus this Pusdi can also be in line with the government program, which since 2006 has established the National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB), which is also being developed in the second-level regions in the form of the Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD). BNPB and BPBD function to cope with disasters, both pre-disaster and post-disaster. Post-disaster activities include emergency response, rehabilitation, and construction, while pre-disaster include prevention, mitigation, and preparedness.

Based on this background, it is very urgent for the academic community of UNY to actively review and contribute ideas to the government and society in terms of disasters. For this reason, discussions, workshops, seminars, and especially research and routine services must be carried out to reduce disaster victims.
