Collection of Used Mineral Water Bottles: An Initial Step in Plastic Waste Sorting and Management

In 2023, UNY introduced a dedicated garbage basket for spent mineral water bottles. This idea aims to train the UNY academic community to sort plastic garbage from the start of disposal. The basket for collecting discarded mineral water bottles is constructed of an iron frame divided by an iron wire mesh. This basket is purposefully constructed with merely an iron frame and iron wire so that discarded mineral water bottles tossed into it may be seen from the outside. So that other people may see the contents of the basket and, perhaps, feel compelled to dispose of used plastic mineral water bottles in it.

The bottles that have been added to this basket are where? In the first step, the bottles gathered in this basket will be gathered and processed in the biological garden's laboratory. The bottles will undergo mechanical shredding using a shredder, resulting in tiny flakes that can be utilized to produce further basic plastic components.

Students and other academicians can easily access the various areas where these used mineral water bottle baskets are placed. These baskets are positioned at the Rectorate Building and the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences as a test. The provision of these baskets in every faculty is the next plan. The baskets will be periodically emptied to allow for shredding. The shredded papers will be packaged and used as starting points for student research in a number of UNY colleges. Some are also utilized as raw materials for trinkets made by art students.

It is hoped that the UNY academic community would become accustomed to sorting waste with the presence of baskets for plastic bottles. Additionally, this may mark the start of UNY's autonomous plastic trash management initiative.
