UNY Students Enhance Children’s Literacy and Sustainable Technology Education in Gunungkidul

A group of students from Universitas Negeri Yogyakarta (UNY) carried out a community service (PLK) initiative aimed at improving children’s literacy skills and introducing sustainable technology education in Gunungkidul Regency. The program was designed to address educational challenges while fostering awareness of technology and sustainability among younger generations.
The PLK team consisted of Asvianita (Regional Language Education) as the team leader; Meyshinta Putri Afifa and Ashka Deva (Educational Management); Alif Karunia and Agista (Regional Language Education); Wanda and Zidan (English Language Education); as well as Muhammad Hamim, Syahri, and Aqhsal (Electrical Engineering Education). The program was carried out under the supervision of Alfian Anggoro Mukti, S.Pd., M.Pd.
The activity focused on providing engaging literacy learning experiences for children through reading sessions, educational games, and interactive learning methods. Through these activities, the students sought to cultivate reading habits, strengthen comprehension skills, and encourage children to develop a lifelong interest in learning.
In addition to literacy development, the students introduced concepts of sustainable technology through hands-on educational activities. The program emphasized the importance of using technology responsibly and creatively to solve everyday problems while promoting environmental sustainability. By combining literacy education with technology awareness, the initiative aimed to equip children with essential competencies needed in the modern era.
The students worked closely with local communities, educators, and children throughout the program. This collaborative approach ensured that the activities were relevant to local needs and could provide lasting benefits even after the program’s completion. Community members welcomed the initiative and expressed appreciation for the students’ efforts to support educational development in the area.
According to the student team, the program was intended not only to improve literacy levels but also to inspire children to view technology as a tool for learning, innovation, and positive social change. The participants showed enthusiasm during the activities, demonstrating curiosity and eagerness to learn about both reading and technology.
The initiative reflects UNY’s commitment to community engagement and educational innovation through student involvement. By integrating literacy promotion with sustainable technology education, the program contributes to the development of knowledgeable, creative, and environmentally conscious future generations.
This program contributes to several Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). It supports SDG 4 (Quality Education) by improving literacy skills and providing innovative learning opportunities for children. The initiative also advances SDG 9 (Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure) by introducing technology-based learning and fostering innovation among young learners. Furthermore, it contributes to SDG 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities) through community-based educational empowerment and the promotion of sustainable practices. By encouraging collaboration between university students, local communities, and educational stakeholders, the program also supports SDG 17 (Partnerships for the Goals).
