UNY Community Service Students Promote Plastic Waste Processing through LENTERA Program in Kulon Progo

Students participating in the Community Service Program (KKN) of Universitas Negeri Yogyakarta (UNY) implemented a community empowerment initiative titled LENTERA (Lingkungan Tertata melalui Anorganik Bernilai) in Serang Hamlet, Sendangsari Village, Pengasih District, Kulon Progo.

The program was designed to raise public awareness about plastic waste management while encouraging creativity by transforming inorganic waste into valuable handicrafts. This initiative supports SDG 12 (Responsible Consumption and Production) by promoting sustainable waste management practices and reducing environmental impact.

Through educational activities and hands-on training, residents were introduced to practical ways of processing plastic waste into useful products. These efforts also contribute to SDG 4 (Quality Education), as the program emphasizes community-based learning and knowledge transfer in environmental sustainability.

In addition, the program fosters environmentally conscious communities by encouraging active participation in maintaining a cleaner and healthier living environment. This aligns with SDG 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities), as it promotes sustainable community development at the local level.

By reducing plastic waste and increasing awareness of environmental issues, the initiative also contributes to SDG 13 (Climate Action), supporting efforts to mitigate the impacts of environmental degradation through grassroots action.

Overall, the LENTERA program demonstrates how student-led initiatives can create meaningful change by integrating environmental education, community empowerment, and sustainable practices, ultimately fostering long-term ecological awareness and resilience.
