UNY and UNSAM Students Collaborate to Reduce Disaster Risk and Promote Environmental Education through Community Service

Students from Universitas Negeri Yogyakarta (UNY) and Universitas Samudra (UNSAM) carried out a collaborative humanitarian Community Service Program (KKN) in Raja Village, Bendahara District, Aceh Tamiang, Aceh, aimed at supporting post-flood recovery while promoting sustainable development values.

A total of 14 students participated in the program, working directly with local communities affected by flooding. One of the main initiatives included providing free medical services to residents, contributing to SDG 3 (Good Health and Well-being) by improving access to basic healthcare for vulnerable groups.

In addition, the students assisted in restoring public facilities by cleaning mud from the village office and community hall, enabling residents to resume daily activities. These recovery efforts reflect the spirit of resilient and inclusive communities as emphasized in SDG 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities).

To strengthen disaster preparedness, the team designed and installed evacuation route signboards at strategic points across the village. This initiative plays a crucial role in enhancing community readiness in flood-prone areas and aligns with SDG 13 (Climate Action) through practical disaster risk reduction measures.

The program also emphasized environmental sustainability through educational campaigns on waste management, encouraging residents to separate organic and inorganic waste. Informational boards and trash bins were installed to support long-term behavioral change, reinforcing commitments to environmental protection under SDG 13 (Climate Action).

Beyond physical recovery, the students contributed to community empowerment by engaging in educational and social activities, including teaching children and supporting interactive learning. These efforts support SDG 4 (Quality Education) by ensuring continued access to learning even in post-disaster conditions.

Through this collaborative initiative, UNY and UNSAM students demonstrated the importance of cross-institutional partnerships in addressing real-world challenges, reflecting the value of SDG 17 (Partnerships for the Goals).

Overall, the program not only delivered immediate relief but also fostered long-term resilience by integrating disaster mitigation, environmental awareness, health services, and education into a unified community development effort.
