UNY KKN Students Initiate GCOSO, a Smart Organic Waste Management Movement in Kulon Progo
Students participating in the Community Service Program (KKN) of Universitas Negeri Yogyakarta (UNY) initiated GCOSO (Gerakan Cerdas Olah Sampah Organik), a movement aimed at improving community awareness of organic waste management in Padukuhan Serang, Sendangsari Village, Pengasih District, Kulon Progo.
The program was designed to educate residents on how household organic waste can be processed into useful products such as compost and liquid organic fertilizer. Through this initiative, the students encouraged the community to see waste not merely as something to be discarded but as a resource that can benefit the environment and agriculture.
The GCOSO program was implemented by a UNY KKN team led by Marcelino Albertus Yosanta Woen together with several team members who collaborated with local residents to conduct educational sessions and practical demonstrations on organic waste processing at the household level.
During the socialization session, the students explained that a large portion of household waste consists of organic materials such as food leftovers, fruit peels, vegetables, and dry leaves. When properly managed, these materials can be transformed into valuable resources that support environmental sustainability and reduce the amount of waste produced by households.
Through the GCOSO movement, the students hope that the community can start simple waste-processing practices from their homes and gradually build a culture of environmental responsibility. The initiative also highlights the role of families as the first environment for instilling awareness and habits of sustainable waste management.
