UNY Inaugurates Kampung Emas Bumijo Kulon: A Realization of a Social Laboratory and 4K Synergy

Universitas Negeri Yogyakarta (UNY) officially inaugurated Kampung Emas Bumijo Kulon in Kelurahan Bumijo, Jetis District, Yogyakarta City on Saturday (13/12/2025). This inauguration establishes the area as a social laboratory that integrates the 4K concept: Campus (Kampus), Kraton (Royal Palace), Community (Kampung), and Office (Kantor).
UNY Rector Prof. Sumaryanto emphasized in his speech that this step demonstrates UNY’s commitment to being more than just an ivory tower, striving to have a real impact within the community. Kampung Emas Bumijo Kulon was chosen because of its strong potential to be developed through six flagship pillars of the program: Environment, Health, Socio-Culture, Education, Economy, and Sports.
Prof. Sumaryanto explained that the development of Kampung Emas Bumijo Kulon includes a range of concrete activities such as waste bank management, maggot cultivation, MSME (UMKM) assistance, and cultural arts preservation.
Wirawan Hario Yudha, Expert Staff for Government and Community Welfare of Yogyakarta City representing the local government, appreciated the initiative. He said that UNY has transformed into a “Golden Tower” (Menara Emas) that directly benefits residents through human resource development and technology-based community development.
The opening event began with a mass exercise attended by about 750 participants and concluded with a plaque signing and a visit to local MSME booths, marking the beginning of sustainable synergy between UNY academics and the Bumijo community.
