To celebrate its 61st anniversary, Universitas Negeri Yogyakarta (UNY) brought the rich tradition of Javanese theater to the stage with a stunning performance of “Satyakarta Sudarsana.” Held at the Performance Hall of the Faculty of Language, Arts, and Culture (FBSB) on May 7, 2025, the Ketoprak play was performed by UNY students from the Faculty of Language, Arts, and Culture and the Faculty of Engineering. The event beautifully showcased the art of storytelling rooted in Javanese culture, drawing the audience into a tale of justice, courage, and truth.
The story of Satyakarta Sudarsana revolves around Raden Satya, the noble son of Adipati Suranjana, the ruler of the Purwasari principality. Tragedy strikes when Raden Satya’s mother, Dewi Kartika, is mysteriously murdered. Suspicion falls upon Raras, a servant in the palace, but the truth remains hidden beneath layers of deceit and betrayal. Raden Satya, driven by grief and a strong sense of justice, vows to leave the palace to seek the truth and restore honor to his family. His journey symbolizes a fight against injustice, reflecting the Javanese philosophy that those who commit wrongdoings will eventually face the consequences.
The performance was not only a celebration of traditional art but also a powerful reminder of the importance of truth and justice. Through vivid storytelling, graceful movements, and traditional Javanese music, the cast brought the spirit of Satyakarta Sudarsana to life. Raden Satya's unwavering commitment to uncovering the truth despite danger and uncertainty inspired the audience, reinforcing the idea that justice, although sometimes slow, will always prevail.
UNY's decision to stage Satyakarta Sudarsana reflects its dedication to preserving cultural heritage while instilling timeless values in its students and community. The powerful message of the play serves as a reminder that integrity and courage are essential in facing life’s challenges. It also highlighted the role of younger generations in keeping traditions alive, ensuring that the wisdom of the past continues to inspire the future.
The audience left the performance not only entertained but also touched by the timeless moral lesson woven into the story—a reminder that truth and justice are worth pursuing, no matter the obstacles. Through events like this, UNY continues to nurture cultural pride and moral integrity in its students, ensuring that the spirit of Javanese tradition lives on.
