Empowering Waste into Beauty: DWP UNY Holds Recycling Training

Waste management has become an urgent issue in many major cities, including Yogyakarta. To help address this problem, Universitas Negeri Yogyakarta (UNY) through the Dharma Wanita Persatuan (DWP) has taken part by organizing a creative recycling program.
Recently, the Economic Division of DWP UNY conducted a training session on recycling plastic bottles into beautiful table decorations. The activity was led directly by the Chairperson of DWP UNY, Sulastri Sumaryanto, along with the Coordinator of the Economic Division, Esti Wahyuni Siswanto, and was attended by 30 DWP UNY members.
In the training, participants were encouraged to process plastic waste that is often discarded. Used plastic bottles, unused cartons, and leftover flowers from gift wrappings were transformed into beautiful and aesthetically valuable table decorations. This activity not only trained skills but also raised awareness about the importance of creatively managing waste.
“The members of DWP UNY are expected to continue innovating in utilizing items around them, so that waste is no longer seen as trash, but can be transformed into something useful and enjoyable,” said Sulastri Sumaryanto.
Furthermore, the results of this training are expected to be shared with each faculty and unit at UNY, so it becomes a collective movement in creating a greener environment. This effort aligns with the 4R concept (Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, Replace) promoted by the government and supports the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly in the aspect of sustainable environment.
Through this simple yet meaningful action, DWP UNY proves that concern for waste can start from small steps, even from one's own desk. With creativity and shared awareness, waste can be transformed into beautiful works.
