STUDENTS OF UNY INTRODUCING DISASTER MITIGATION THROUGH SEBAYA TUTORS IN SCHOOL CHILDREN

Knowledge of disaster mitigation is a urgent matters are introduced in disaster-prone areas. The discourse on disaster education which is still being debated among academics makes the need for disaster mitigation less attention in schools, especially among elementary school students. In fact, the most vulnerable victims of natural disasters are children.

Based on this, several UNY students from across majors initiated a disaster mitigation program through peer tutoring methods at SDN Soka, Pundong, Bantul. The selection of SDN Soka as a disaster mitigation location was due to the location of SDN Soka which was close to the Opak river. If it rains heavily, the water surface overflows and floods occur. Meanwhile, the hills behind the school building have the potential to experience landslides that endanger the school community.

The idea of disaster mitigation through this peer tutor learning model has received the attention of many parties. This activity then received an injection of funds from the Ministry of Research, Technology, and Higher Education. In June 2019, this activity also received assistance from sengon, teak, and trembesi seeds from the Opak Serayu River Basin Management Center (BPDAS). School residents then worked together to plant tree seeds in the Pundong area and around the school to glue the soil, as an early prevention effort against floods and landslides. This mitigation activity is chaired by Bagus Cahyo Nugroho (Geographical Education), Fithra Agit Nurmawan (Geographical Education), Muhammad Abdul Hadi (Psychology), Risty Anggitiara (Psychology), and Dewi Masyitoh (PGSD).
