UNY Students Promote Clean and Healthy Living Habits and Safe Pesticide Use in Kendal Hamlet

Students of the 2024 Accounting Education Undergraduate Program, Faculty of Economics and Business (FEB), Universitas Negeri Yogyakarta (UNY), organized a community outreach program on Clean and Healthy Living Behavior (PHBS) and the safe use of pesticides in Kendal Hamlet, Bangunkerto Village, Turi District, Sleman Regency. The initiative reflects the students' commitment to supporting the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 3: Good Health and Well-being.

The program was designed to increase public awareness of the importance of maintaining personal and environmental hygiene while educating local farmers on the responsible use of pesticides to minimize health risks and environmental pollution. Through this initiative, the students sought to encourage healthier lifestyles and safer agricultural practices within the community.

During the educational sessions, residents received information on the principles of Clean and Healthy Living Behavior (PHBS), including proper handwashing, maintaining household sanitation, proper waste management, and preventing disease transmission. The students also highlighted the importance of adopting healthy daily habits to improve overall quality of life.

The second session focused on the safe handling and application of pesticides. Participants learned about selecting appropriate pesticides, following recommended dosages, wearing personal protective equipment (PPE), proper storage methods, and the correct disposal of pesticide containers. The students emphasized that responsible pesticide use not only protects farmers' health but also preserves soil quality, water resources, and surrounding ecosystems.

The outreach activities received enthusiastic participation from local residents, who actively engaged in discussions and shared their experiences regarding health practices and farming activities. The interactive approach enabled participants to better understand the practical application of the knowledge presented.

Through this program, the UNY students hope the knowledge gained by the community will be implemented in daily life, contributing to healthier households, safer agricultural practices, and a cleaner environment. The initiative demonstrates how student-led community service can generate meaningful impacts while supporting sustainable development at the local level.
