Improve Early Preparedness, UNY PLK Students Conduct Disaster Education Program with Sleman Fire Department

Raising awareness of disaster mitigation from an early age has become a key concern for students of Universitas Negeri Yogyakarta (UNY) participating in the Off-Campus Learning Program (PLK). Through a disaster preparedness education initiative conducted in collaboration with the Sleman Fire and Rescue Department, members of the Gatak Abhyudaya student team introduced elementary school students to fire hazards and appropriate emergency response procedures. The activity was recently held at SD Negeri Cancangan, Sleman.

The program was designed to foster disaster awareness among young learners by providing fundamental knowledge about fire prevention, emergency response, and personal safety. Through interactive presentations and practical demonstrations delivered by firefighters, students were encouraged to understand the causes of fire incidents and learn how to respond calmly and effectively in emergency situations.

During the session, participants were introduced to firefighting equipment and received firsthand explanations from professional firefighters regarding evacuation procedures and fire suppression techniques. The hands-on approach enabled students to gain practical experience while strengthening their understanding of disaster preparedness in a safe and engaging learning environment.

The activity also reflected the students’ commitment to promoting community resilience through education. By introducing disaster mitigation concepts at an early age, the program aimed to help children develop awareness, confidence, and the skills needed to respond appropriately during emergencies.

Through this collaborative initiative with the Sleman Fire and Rescue Department, UNY students demonstrated the university’s commitment to community engagement while supporting the development of a disaster-aware generation. The program contributes to the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 4 (Quality Education), SDG 3 (Good Health and Well-being), and SDG 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities).
