IKOR Serves: UNY Students Encourage the Elderly to Stay Active and Minimize Injury Risk

The Student Association of Sports Science (HIMA IKOR) of the Faculty of Sport Sciences and Health at Universitas Negeri Yogyakarta (UNY) once again demonstrated its concern for the community through a community service program titled “IKOR Mengabdi” (IKOR Serves), recently held. The activity took place at the Budi Luhur Social Service Center for the Elderly (BPSTW) in Bantul, targeting senior citizens as the main beneficiaries.
Carrying the theme “Workshop on Injury Risk Management for the Elderly through Education and Physical Activity,” the program was attended by approximately 80 elderly participants, who showed great enthusiasm from the early hours of the event. The activity was not merely focused on delivering educational materials but also created a warm and enjoyable atmosphere through various interactive activities.
The series of activities began with a workshop on degenerative diseases commonly experienced by older adults. The material was presented by Dr. Enggista Hendriko Delano, S.Or., M.Or., AIFO, who explained in a simple and accessible manner how to understand, prevent, and manage injury risks in old age. His communicative approach enabled participants to easily understand the material while actively engaging in discussions.
The atmosphere became even more lively as the elderly participants were invited to take part in a variety of light physical games specially designed for seniors. In addition to being entertaining, these activities aimed to improve physical fitness and strengthen social interaction among participants.
The event coordinator, Linggar Fahri Aimar, stated that the program represents a concrete contribution by students in applying sports science knowledge directly within the community.
“We aim to organize activities that are not only educational but also enjoyable, so that the elderly remain motivated to maintain their health,” he said.
The activity ran smoothly and was filled with warmth and enthusiasm. The active participation of the elderly served as evidence that an educational approach packaged in a recreational manner can create a positive impact. Through IKOR Mengabdi, UNY students hope to raise awareness among older adults about the importance of appropriate physical activity while helping them enjoy healthier, more active, and higher-quality lives in old age.
