Behind a 3.99 GPA: Leni’s Story of Overcoming Grief and Holding Onto Hope Amid Limitations

Academic achievement is often seen as just a number. However, for Leni Firda Kurnia Sari, a graduate of Universitas Negeri Yogyakarta (UNY), that achievement tells a deeper story of loss, responsibility, and resilience in shaping her future.

During the lively graduation ceremony of UNY Period IV Phase 1 in 2026, Leni was announced as the undergraduate graduate with the highest GPA of 3.99. Behind this near-perfect number, however, lies a journey far from simple.

A student of the Javanese Language Education Program at the Faculty of Language, Arts, and Culture, she completed her studies in just 3 years and 6 months. Her accomplishment reflects how access to quality education can enable anyone—regardless of economic background—to achieve excellence.

A major turning point in her life came in her third semester, when she lost her mother. In the midst of grief, Leni chose to continue her studies while also taking on significant responsibilities at home. She learned to strengthen herself, manage her emotions, and carry out her duties simultaneously.

“I had to keep studying while managing my emotions and handling responsibilities at home,” she said.

As the only daughter in the family, Leni took on a dual role—not only as a university student but also as the person responsible for domestic matters. This situation required strong discipline, as well as the ability to manage time and energy, ultimately shaping her mental resilience.

Interestingly, Leni did not rely on complicated study strategies. She emphasized consistency and responsibility. Simple routines—such as regularly reviewing materials, completing assignments on time, and maintaining a daily schedule—became the foundation of her success.

As a recipient of the KIP Kuliah scholarship, she realized that access to higher education is a crucial pathway to improving life opportunities. Rather than seeing economic limitations as barriers, she used them as motivation to move forward and bridge the gap between dreams and reality.

“We cannot choose how we are born, but we can choose our future,” Leni said.

A supportive academic environment also played an important role in her journey. Encouragement from lecturers and peers created a learning space that fostered growth and mutual support. Her choice to study Javanese Language Education was driven by her concern for social values—seeing language as a means to nurture ethics, respect, and harmony in society.

Leni’s story shows that behind outstanding academic achievements lies perseverance, sacrifice, and strong determination. Her journey is not merely about earning a high GPA, but about overcoming life’s challenges while continuing to hold onto hope.
