From Gen Z Anxiety to Innovation: UNY Students Develop Javanese Philosophy-Based Virtual Reality for Self-Discovery

Responding to the growing anxiety and identity crisis among Generation Z, a team of students from Universitas Negeri Yogyakarta (UNY) has developed an innovative virtual reality (VR) platform that combines modern technology with Javanese philosophy to promote self-reflection and mental well-being.
The project was initiated by five students—Choirrunisa, Siti Indah Yulianti, Ajeng Ranaya Syah, Afifah Nur Hasanah, and Anisa Zulfa Nabila—under the supervision of Dr. Ali Mahmudi. Their innovation integrates the Javanese philosophy Sangkan Paraning Dumadi, which explores the origin and purpose of human life, into an immersive VR experience.
The idea emerged from their concern over the psychological pressures faced by Gen Z in today’s fast-paced digital era, where many young people experience anxiety, confusion, and a loss of direction. At the same time, traditional cultural values that could serve as guidance are increasingly being overlooked.
Through the VR platform, users are invited to enter a reflective journey that combines visual and emotional experiences, encouraging them to explore life’s meaning, understand themselves, and find inner balance. This innovative approach transforms technology from mere entertainment into a powerful tool for personal growth and learning.
To ensure its effectiveness, the research involved hundreds of Gen Z respondents in the Special Region of Yogyakarta. The results are expected to provide a practical solution for improving mental well-being while strengthening cultural identity among young people.
This innovation contributes directly to SDG 3 (Good Health and Well-being) by addressing mental health challenges among youth through immersive and reflective experiences. At the same time, it supports SDG 4 (Quality Education) by introducing technology-based learning media that enhances self-awareness and critical thinking.
Furthermore, by revitalizing local wisdom through digital innovation, the project aligns with SDG 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities), particularly in preserving cultural heritage amid rapid modernization.
Ultimately, this initiative demonstrates that technological advancement and cultural values can go hand in hand, offering meaningful solutions for modern challenges while helping young people reconnect with their roots and rediscover their sense of purpose.
