UNY Students Introduce Emotional Awareness to Children through Sunflower Planting Activity

Students from Universitas Negeri Yogyakarta (UNY) conducted a psychosocial support program for children in Teluk Kepayang Village, Aceh Tamiang, by introducing emotional awareness through interactive activities and sunflower planting.

The program was designed to help children, particularly those affected by post-disaster conditions, recognize and express their emotions in a healthy way. Through light discussions and interactive games, students guided children in identifying basic emotions such as happiness, sadness, anger, and fear.

After the session, children were invited to plant sunflower seeds as a symbolic activity representing growth, hope, and the process of learning to manage emotions. This simple yet meaningful approach helped children rebuild daily routines while fostering a sense of responsibility and emotional expression.

Each child was also encouraged to monitor their feelings while caring for the plant, using emotion stickers to reflect their daily experiences. This method not only strengthened emotional literacy but also supported children’s psychological recovery after the disruption caused by disasters.

The initiative reflects a strong contribution to SDG 3 (Good Health and Well-being), particularly in promoting mental health and psychosocial support for children. At the same time, the educational approach used in the program aligns with SDG 4 (Quality Education) by integrating experiential learning into child development.

Furthermore, the activity encourages long-term resilience and emotional stability within communities, contributing to SDG 16 (Peace, Justice, and Strong Institutions) by fostering inclusive and supportive social environments, especially for vulnerable groups such as children.

Overall, the program demonstrates how student-led community service can play a vital role in addressing not only physical recovery but also emotional healing, ensuring that children are better equipped to face future challenges with confidence and resilience.
