Students at UNY Develop “Beetrass” Liquid Soap from Lemongrass and Beet Tuber

A team of five students from UNY successfully developed an innovative liquid soap product named Beetrass Soap. The product is made from lemongrass (Cymbopogon citratus) and beet tuber (Beta vulgaris L), aiming to provide both health benefits and skin-care effects.
The innovation won funding through the Student Creativity Entrepreneurship Programme (PKM-K) 2025 from the Ministry of Higher Education, Science and Technology.
The team members are: Shafa Fitriana (Economics Education 2023), Iffrian Ciptaning Muffia T. (Accounting 2023), Asti Ananta (Economics Education 2024), Camelia Dewi Pratiwi (Chemistry 2022), and Hilma Warda Rosyada (Biology Education 2023). They were supervised by lecturer Ngadiyono, M.Pd. from the Faculty of Economics & Business.
Beet tuber is used because it contains natural antibacterial compounds which can help prevent acne-causing bacteria. It also contains vitamin E, phenolic compounds and antioxidants that help maintain skin moisture, repair damaged cells, and slow down aging.
Lemongrass oil (from the lemongrass plant) is used for its calming aroma and also for skin health: its citronellol, citral and geraniol contents help prevent irritation and inhibit bacterial growth.
The product has passed safety testing and obtained certification as a quality guarantee.
In addition to skin health benefits, the innovation supports environmental-friendly production and natural materials. The article states that the innovation contributes to the achievement of the SDGs, especially SDG 3 (Good Health and Well-being) and SDG 12 (Responsible Consumption and Production)
