Sobat Bumi UNY Colours the 80th Independence Day with a Green Action: Budikdamber Education and Planting 60 Mango Trees

On Saturday (30 August 2025), in Dusun Iroyudan, Bantul, a special celebration of Indonesia’s 80th Independence Day was held. Instead of a conventional ceremony, residents together with UNY scholarship recipients from the “Sobat Bumi” programme of the Pertamina Foundation carried out Green Action Chapter #1 under the theme “My Earth is Green, Self-Sufficient Food” (“Bumiku Asri, Pangan Berdikari”).

The event was a collaborative effort among villagers, the Women’s Farming Group (KWT), and four youth communities: Novo Club Region 4 Yogyakarta, Green Generation DIY, Pemuda Peduli Yogyakarta, and the student organisation IMMAPRES UNY. All participated actively, strengthening the spirit of mutual cooperation for environmental preservation and food self-sufficiency.

The programme opened with a prayer and welcoming remarks from the hamlet head, then moved on to education on the optimization of Budikdamber (small-scale fish farming in buckets). 200 catfish seed (lele masamo) and 50 water-spinach seedlings (kangkung) were cultivated in this simple system. Fish waste was used as natural fertiliser for the vegetables—a solution that is space-efficient, eco-friendly and promotes family food security.

In addition, IMMAPRES UNY shared knowledge about turning kitchen waste into liquid and solid organic fertilisers. The community showed enthusiasm as they were given practical solutions to reduce household waste and enrich their plants. Afterwards, the action continued with the planting of 60 mango trees (variety khiojay) in residents’ yards. Mango was chosen due to its quick growth, long-term productivity, and ability to absorb approximately 445.3 kg of CO₂ per year.

A resident leader, Muh. Hisyam, said: “Alhamdulillah, this helps our villagers with the national food-resilience programme. Budikdamber can reduce household spending, and the mango trees—hopefully fruiting in four years—will benefit our children and grandchildren.”

Beyond a mere environmental action, this initiative fostered collective awareness that caring for the Earth is a shared responsibility. The act of planting trees together symbolised mutual cooperation in line with the spirit of independence. The involvement of youth communities showed that young generations are ready to be drivers of change. Through this action, Sobat Bumi UNY not only executed the green-action component of the Pertamina Foundation Scholarship, but also advanced village self-reliance, sustainability, and food security. From Dusun Iroyudan emerged a strong message: small steps from a community can deliver large impacts for the Earth and for the future.
