Utilizing Rainwater and Household Waste

The team from the Civil Engineering Education and Planning Department, Faculty of Engineering, Universitas Negeri Yogyakarta (PTSP FT UNY) became the Favorite Cinnertion Champion in the D'Village 10th Edition event organized by the Surabaya Institute of Technology (ITS) (02/06–31/10/2021). This team consists of M. Fajar Amir (Civil Engineering and Planning Education Study Program 2019), Novarida Nurul Sabrina (Applied Undergraduate Civil Engineering Study Program 2019), and Raden Rara Bintang Permata Hati (Civil Engineering Education Study Program and Planning 2020) under the guidance of Qonaah Rizqi Fajriani, NS.

In this event, a team from UNY presented an innovative idea of ​​using rainwater and household wastewater to maintain and increase the potential of groundwater and surface water with a case study in the Kulonprogo Regency. M. Fajar Amir, one of the team members, explained that this concept adopts blue-green construction. It will make the utilization and management optimally integrated.

 

Fajar explained that this innovation was motivated by problems in providing and managing clean water and sanitation in Indonesia. "Rainwater supports basic and secondary water needs, such as cooking, drinking, washing, and sanitation. It will help people save on the use of well water and Municipal Waterworks (PDAM)," he said.

 

"Meanwhile, household wastewater utilizes tertiary water needs, such as agriculture and fisheries, as well as supporting environmental conservation for gardening, hydroponics, and water," he said.

 

"When there is excess water, infiltration wells to prevent flooding, and a recharge yard aims to seep water into the ground as groundwater recharge," explained Fajar.

 

"This innovation aims to support the maintenance and protection of water resources regularly to prevent environmental damage to create a better condition in the future," he explained. (hryo, ts-Shafia, Waryati)
