UNY Students Create Bird Repellents for Rice Farmers

Indonesia is one of the agricultural countries with the most significant rice agricultural product globally. Based on data from the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) in 2020, Indonesia's rice production reached 54.65 million tons, the third-largest in the world.

But in reality, often, the rice produced by farmers is not proportional to the area of rice fields because it is disturbed by organisms such as brown planthoppers, green leaf hoppers, rats, golden snails, and birds. In fact, traditionally, farmers have made efforts to prevent birds from eating their rice by making bird repellents using cans and ropes.

This issue later caught the attention of a group of Yogyakarta State University (UNY) students to make a solar bird repellent by working automatically by utilizing solar energy. Civil Engineering Education Study Program and Sherly Hariyanti Chemical Education Study Program succeeded in making tools to help tired farmers to repel birds.

Wolly explained that initially, this tool was designed to help farmers in the Sleman area of  Yogyakarta in eradicating bird pests using solar panels.

In order to make the tool, materials are needed, including Arduino Uno, torque servo, battery, bell, solar panel, and adapter. Nadya Putri Kurniasari also explained that the assembly of this tool was started by creating an Arduino Uno script with Proteus programming, which was made on a PC device.

How bird repellents work using solar panels, namely:

1. The solar panel will capture sunlight which is the primary means of charging the battery, which will be the source of voltage on the Arduino and servo.

2. When the ON button is turned on, the Arduino will drive the programmed servo.

3. The servo will then move the rope that has been attached to the field by being given a bell.

4. From the movement of the rope will produce a sound that will make the bird go away.

The advantage of this tool compared to traditional tools used by farmers before is that farmers can more easily repel bird pests because it does not require excessive energy and time—solar panels and adapters.

Previously, the work of the UNY Student Team won the International Invention Competition for Young Moslem Scientists 2021 in Bandung some time ago. This is in accordance with UNY's sustainable development agenda in the fields of quality education and food security to end hunger. (Fahri, ts- Vannya)
