Embracing Equality through Gender Comics

One of the social challenges in the industrial revolution 4.0 era is creating equality for all, including bringing equality between men and women in all fields. However, these days the position and role of women socially are still underestimated. Some data reveal that in terms of work, the dominance of men is still considerable. One of these problems is the lack of gender awareness from an early age. Various ways have been done, but the increase in gender awareness has not been maximized.

Reflecting on these challenges, two Sociological Education students at UNY, Khairunnisak (Nisa) and Riselda Jandi Gunawan (Elda), tried to provide a solution by designing an online application in the form of gender comics for high school students. According to Nisa, this comic emerged because they were anxious if students did not understand the concept of gender equality. In addition, students use smartphones a lot in learning, so the idea arises: why not educate students about gender by using online applications?. Elda added that being online is still not enough. There needs to be an exciting way to teach gender equality, and comics are considered the most appropriate to socialize gender equality. According to Elda, comics have advantages, and besides being illustrated, they are also light to read, so they hope to increase gender awareness.

They presented the idea of gender comics based on an android application in a paper competition and debate at the National Olympiad of Indonesian Anthropology Sociology at Hamzanwadi University, Selong, West Nusa Tenggara (16/10/19). Nisa and Elda's gender comics won 2nd place and received appreciation from other participants. The Paper and Debate Competition itself is divided into two rounds, followed by 12 finalist teams. Each group presented their paper in the first round, and four teams were selected to participate in the debate round. In the discussion round, each team met with another group using a knockout system, said Nisa. For Nisa and Elda, this achievement is the fruit of the learning process at UNY Sociology Education which provides opportunities for students to develop their ideas and ideas as widely as possible.(ts-Shafia, Vannya)
