Avoid Fast Food, Mothers magically turn cassava into awesome food

The culture of eating instant food is undeniable. There are various types of fast food in practical packaging. The public, especially kids, loves fast food so much without considering the dangers. The products are practical, fast and easy to find.

With the rising popularity of fast food, they can not guarantee the nutrient content. Especially kids that are in the age of need nutrients.

People of Jawusan kidul village are afraid of the impact of the popularity of all the fast-food that has preservatives inside. The village is located in Pogungkalangan, Purworejo Province majority inhabited with people in productive age and kids around 5 - 7 years old. The mothers are mostly working as a house-wife.

UNY students who are in a Community Service Programme saw the problem in Bayan village. One of the mothers, Mrs. Soediono says, “kids nowadays love snacks so much. It is so hard to make them eat vegetables and tubers like cassava”.

Finally, the Community Service Programme K083 students also feel the problem that burdens the villagers, and start a workshop about a healthy snack. The idea is that, if the mothers could cook local food and make it more interesting, maybe the kids would like to try the food.

Using local food such as cassava and vegetables, the mothers make it into a better food product. In the activity that was held on Sunday (28/07/2019), they shared information about food that can be made from local foods so the mothers try to make it. The activity was held in the Community Service Programme K083 housing and followed by around 30 people. Together with Mrs. Daryanti M.P, as a lecturer in the faculty of agriculture from the University of Tunas Pembangunan Surakarta, the mothers are being informed about nutrient food to help the growth of their kids as the principal of B2SA.In the practice session, the mothers made a snack for their kids that was made to enrich the nutrients such as vegetable nuggets and cassava donuts. Of course with a unique shape to make the kids curious about the taste.

As Mrs. Daryanti says, the creativity to make a healthy snack for kids from local foods could enrich the kids' curiosity to eat the food and avoid junk food. I agree with that, Mrs. Soedino says, kids don’t like to eat cassava, but when they saw the cassava donut, they must be interested. It is hoped that the healthy snack workshop could continue to motivate mothers to increase the family income.
