KKN UNY Fights Dengue with “Sarina” — Natural Anti-Mosquito Spray — in Kebumen

On 25 November 2025, students from regular Community Service Program (KKN) batch 083 of Universitas Negeri Yogyakarta (UNY) actively participated in efforts to prevent the spread of Dengue fever (DBD) in Dusun Dukuh RT 003 & 004 / RW 001, Ngabean, Mirit, Kebumen.

The anti-mosquito initiative — named “SARINA” — was launched in response to dengue cases recorded between January and October 2025 by the local health center (Puskesmas Mirit).

Under the leadership of Lasmana Adi Nugraha and nine other students, the UNY team collaborated with community volunteers (PKK) and the Puskesmas to carry out a series of preventive efforts. Their work began with a massive mosquito-breeding site eradication campaign (PSN), inspecting water containers and trash around households to eliminate mosquito larvae habitats.

Following this, they conducted education and outreach, explaining the dangers posed by mosquitoes and teaching the community how to exploit the natural mosquito-repellent properties of the plant lemongrass (serai). As a result, they demonstrated how to make a natural mosquito-repellent spray using lemongrass. On the launch day of SARINA, about 30 representatives of PKK from RT 003 and 004 Dusun Dukuh attended the event, where residents were taught to process lemongrass into sprayable repellent.

According to the representative from Puskesmas Mirit, the aroma of lemongrass can help repel mosquitoes — supporting the use of SARINA as a natural and accessible solution for the residents of Ngabean to protect themselves against bites from the dengue-carrying mosquito Aedes aegypti, which is most active from morning through late afternoon.

Additionally, to encourage sustainability, the KKN team distributed lemongrass seedlings to all participants present — so community members could grow their own lemongrass and maintain a steady supply of this natural repellent.

The ultimate goal of the program is to raise the village's “free-larvae index” (Angka Bebas Jentik, ABJ) to more than 95%, creating a healthy environment free from dengue risk.
